Downy mildew Photo Identification

Previous Next
  • Pest Type: Disease
  • Crops Affected: Wheat, Rice, Oats, Soybeans
  • Scientific Name: Sclerophthora macrospora (wheat); Peronospora manshurica (soybean)
Symptoms
This fungal disease first appears as pale green to yellow spots on the upper leaf surface. Lesions turn grayish brown to dark brown with a yellow or light green margin. Tufts of gray fungal growth may be visible on the lower leaf surface during moist weather. Severely affected leaves turn brown and drop off. Whitish fungal growth or crust may be present on interior of pods and seed coats. Systemically infected seedlings from infected seeds are stunted with mottled foliage.

Disease Cycle
This disease survives and overwinters on seed and on crop debris. The fungal spores are airborne. High humidity and cool temperatures favor spread of this disease; so it is common in wet years, but rarely causes significant yield losses.

Control Measures
Good farm practices, such as proper drainage, sanitation, and crop rotation, help control this disease. Do not plant in areas prone to flooding. Resistant varieties and chemical rescue treatments may not be available. Contact local advisers concerning best control measures in your area.
