Rhizoctonia Root and Stem Rot Photo Identification

Previous Next
  • Pest Type: Disease
  • Crops Affected: Soybeans, Cotton
  • Scientific Name: Rhizoctonia solani
Symptoms
This fungus can cause preemergence or postemergence damping-off of seedlings and wilting. It can cause brown or reddish brown lesions on larger seedlings and young plant stems down to the soil line and on the tap root. Infected stems often break in the lesioned area. Roots may die from a firm, dry, brown or reddish brown decay.

Disease Cycle
The fungal structures overwinter in the soil and in crop residue. Stress conditions favor infection. Warm and dry soil prior to planting, followed by warm and wet conditions after planting favor this disease. This fungus can survive for years in the soil.

Control Measures
Plant certified, high-quality, crack-free seed capable of at least 85% germination in a warm or standard test and 70% in a cold test. Treat seed with a protecting fungicide. Do not plant carryover seed or seed that has a high percentage of cracking. Avoid excessive irrigation for the first 10-15 days after planting.
