Purple seed stain Photo Identification

Previous Next
  • Pest Type: Disease
  • Crops Affected: Soybeans
  • Scientific Name: Cercospora kikuchii
Symptoms
Cercospora leaf spot is a fungal disease. First symptoms are usually dark purple cotyledons with premature drop, followed by stunted or killed seedlings. Seedling leaves have purple to red angular lesions along the outer margins of upper leaves. Purple seed stain is caused by the same fungus. Seed discoloration varies from pink to dark purple. Cracks often develop in the discolored areas of the seed. At the same time, reddish spots may develop on mature leaves.

Disease Cycle
This fungus overwinters in soybean crop residue and as mycelium on seed. Disease development is favored by hot and humid conditions. Spores from infected cotyledons are splashed or blown to leaves and stems.

Control Measures
Plant high quality seed of a resistant variety. Use fungicide seed treatments, if necessary.
